Over 1,000 young athletes (14-18) descended on Trinidad and Tobago over the first two weeks of August 2023 for the 7th edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games and one of the athletes representing England was our very own Alice from Year 12.
Selected to represent England in Beach Volleyball, Alice and her teammate, Daisy, traveled to the Caribbean Islands two weeks prior to the start of the tournament to train and prepare.
Their tournament began with two games against Australia and Rwanda. After placing second in their group, they progressed to the next stage where they faced the Cayman Islands whom they beat in a tightly contested game. From there they faced Kenya in the quarterfinals. It was a close game, with two very strong teams giving all they had. Kenya would eventually win the match, however, for Alice it was the opportunity to represent England on the international stage that has impacted her the most.
“The experience we had was amazing. I met loads of new people from all over the world and have built bonds from our shared experiences at the tournament.”
– Alice (Y12)
At St Helen’s we provide a wonderful environment for girls to flourish and succeed, encouraging them to pursue their passions through a wide range of academic subjects and co-curricular opportunities.
We are incredibly proud of Alice and congratulate her on not only flying England’s flag on the international stage but also showcasing what it means to be a St Helen’s girl.
