On Sunday, 3rd December 2023, a team of 13 cadets from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) RAF Section of St Helen’s and Merchant Taylors’ School (MTS) participated in the Royal Air Squadron Trophy (RAST) competition at RAF Halton.
The RAST is a prestigious event that tests the skills and knowledge of cadets from CCF-RAF Sections across the country. The competition consisted of seven challenges: uniform inspection, drill, RAF/RAFAC general knowledge, aircraft recognition, first aid, air rifle shooting, and a leadership/command task. The cadets had to demonstrate their proficiency and teamwork in each of these areas, as well as their enthusiasm and spirit.
The cadets trained hard for several weeks in preparation for the competition. The team was made up of four St Helen’s and nine MTS cadets from across Years 10 -13; led by Flight Lieutenant Shirley (MTS) and supported by Civilian Instructor Heavyside (St Helen’s).
The RAST is an annual competition that aims to promote excellence and camaraderie among CCF-RAF Sections. It is sponsored by the Royal Air Squadron, a charitable organisation that supports the RAF and its personnel. The competition also offers the chance for cadets to meet and interact with other cadets from different schools and backgrounds, and to learn more about the RAF and its history.
The cadets performed well in all the challenges and received positive feedback from the judges and staff. As a school community we congratulate them on their efforts.
