We offer exceptional opportunities for involvement beyond the classroom in all Arts disciplines. We have an excellent and extensive co-curricular provision that ensures creativity and enjoyment.
As part of our rich co-curricular pursuits, we produce a joint play/musical each year, in collaboration with students from Merchant Taylors’ School. Recent productions have included 9 to 5 and Woyzeck. We also produce plays for girls in Middle School, such as Lord of the Flies and The Glove Thief, in addition to showcases of examination work for parents and the school community.
A variety of weekly Drama clubs are held at lunch times ranging from Musical Theatre Club, Costume Club and the ‘1 O’ Clock Club’, where students from all years come together to perform, analyse and watch each other’s exciting and enjoyable work.
Students are also encouraged to attend The Technical Theatre Club run by our Theatre Technician. Technically-minded students are encouraged to provide their expertise on productions and performances of all kinds throughout the year.
Alongside the curriculum, the department also offers LAMDA qualifications. Students can choose from the following LAMDA courses: Public Speaking, Acting, Musical Theatre and Devising. This is a popular co-curricular activity with the girls.
In addition, there are occasional visits by professionals, allowing girls the chance to work with industry practitioners to develop their skills and technique.
The Performing Arts plays a part within the House System with an annual House Arts competition where Year 12 students write, choreograph, compose, design and direct their own original work to be judged by an outside adjudicator. This is a fantastic event and encourages girls from all year groups to get involved.
Performing Arts is an established part of St Helen’s life and is continuously expanding and evolving. We encourage all students to get involved in either the performance or technical aspects of the drama on offer.
